The Copy and Paste Show takes its point of departure from the evolvement of copy-and-paste culture, where the copying of html codes on the web has become the new technique of identity construction and style development. Drawing on the increasingly user-friendly environment of new technologies, the project investigates notions of the networker and the networked, the increase in breadth versus the loose of depth, and the rise of new social networks and power relations. With its lines of links and dependency on other people's media, the Internet has become the centre of copy-and-paste culture. Surface programming is nothing new, but is through new systems of appropriation taken to extremes as a tool for image making and style generating, as well as for culture distribution. With roots in the industrial period and the transfer of skills from human to the machine, new technologies have increasingly alienated the worker from the process, but at the same time opened new possibilities of distribution and creativity. The artists in the show explore how digital tools alter music production and aesthetic style, and how new social networks follow.
